Objective:
Alleviating poverty through the use of Information and
Communication Technology
Description of the project:
This special Programme is a structured initiative aimed at
fighting poverty through the usage of Information Technology and
Communication. The Programme consists of 5 interrelated projects
supported by a Technical Assistance Unit. The 5 projects are:

Smart Schools:
The Smart-Schools Network Initiative will establish a framework
among a number of pilot schools with the objective of ensuring
that all the Egyptian students are “computer literate” after the
preparatory school, with special emphasis given to
underprivileged areas. The project represents the first step
toward a global modernisation of the Egyptian School System.

Mobile Internet Unit:
The project will implement ICT Mobile Units to expose teachers
and students to computer literacy, and will complement the Smart
Schools initiative in sub-urban and rural areas not yet equipped
with computer labs.

IT for illiteracy eradication:
The principal output of the project is a set of CD-ROMs to
assist in learning to read and write basic Arabic language.

Community Knowledge/E-library:
The objective of the project is to establish a system that will
allow gathering, validating, maintaining and distributing
relevant information, to and from local communities, in digital
format and its dissemination to end-users. The initiative will
initially concentrate on health information, with special
emphasis on preventive medicine, in coordination with WHO.

Community Portal:
The project aims at supplying updated and pertinent information
to the users of the IT Clubs and other Internet-enabled
information outlet in Egypt. The main output will be a web-based
portal providing and linking information related to
socio-economic development, employment, social services,
governance etc..
