In
the first months of 1996, the Egyptian Ministry of Health elaborated a
new evaluation on health sector, pointing out the necessity of a broad
reform. In adopting the Health Sector Reform Program, the Egyptian
Government has identified a medium-long term strategy to improve the
population health conditions, to ensure access to higher quality health
services, at reasonable and sustainable prices for the beneficiaries.
In
the framework of the Egyptian Health Sector Reform, the project aims at
providing concrete support to the University of Alexandria and the
Egyptian Ministry of Health in the implementation of the health reform
recently promoted by the Egyptian Government. The action will be carried
out by promoting research, consulting, training and control activities
in the field of Public Health protection.
In
addition to this, a unit for public health governance will be realized
within the Medical Technology Centre of the Medical Research Institute
of the University of Alexandria. This unit will be equipped with a
high-security biological laboratory, certified by the World Health
Organization, to diagnose and monitor emerging infectious diseases. In
order to implement project activities, the Medical Research Institute of
the University of Alexandria will also collaborate with the expertise of
the Superior Institute of Health in Rome and with Italian academic
institutions.
