ITALIAN-EGYPTIAN DEBT FOR DEVELOPMENT SWAP PROGRAM PHASE II

A continuous commitment for the economic development:

“ Marine Aquaculture Development in Egypt”


Marine Aquaculture Development in EgyptMarine Aquaculture Development in EgyptApplicant and Implementing Agency: General Authority for Fish Resources Development (GAFRD)

Total Budget: LE 38.620.465 (around USD 6.995.000)

In the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, in particular the Agadir Declaration, the initiative promoted by the General Authority for Fish Resources Development - GAFDR intends to consolidate fishery sector in Egypt, through synergies between public and private sector. The project, which will be realized in the North Coast, near Marsa Matrouh, about 350 km from Alexandria, will facilitate business opportunities, technology transfer and development in fishery and aqua culture sector between the two Mediterranean shores.

Moreover, the project, based on four complementary components, will be realized in coordination with another initiative for the development of the North Mediterranean coast promoted by Italy together with the European Commission.

Marine Aquaculture Development in EgyptThe main components of the initiative are:

1. Creation of a Fishery Technical Agency to support the private sector;

2. Support to the Fish Unit of GAFRD in Cairo to improve the product quality,

3. Technology transfer for marine aquaculture by the realization and management of an hatchery, and

4. know-how transfer for the installation and management of a pilot cage for aquaculture.
